Multilingual tour leader and a limoncino tasting
Free time in Monterosso, Vernazza and Manarola
Cinque Terre train card and park access only if you pick that option

The villages each tour really reaches matter more than the price. Coaches cannot drive into the

The honest version
Five villages, three hours away: plan for the journey.
The Cinque Terre are five fishing villages on the Ligurian coast, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia,
Manarola and Riomaggiore, strung along 12 km of cliffs and terraced vineyards and protected as a national
park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. They are linked by a local train that runs every 15 to 20
minutes in season, by a coastal footpath and, from late March to 1 November, by boat.
From Milan they are about 230 km away, roughly 3 hours each way by direct Intercity train or by
coach. That is the part most tour pages skip: on a 12 to 14 hour day you get about 4 to 6 hours on the coast,
and coach tours lose more if traffic is bad. Pick a tour for the villages and the hours it gives you, travel
light, and do not try to see all five.

01
How many villages?
Three, maybe four. Monterosso, Vernazza and Manarola or Riomaggiore is the classic day.
02
Train or coach?
The train is cheaper and faster door to door; a coach tour organises everything for you.
03
Do I need a card?
Only for several train hops or the paid path: €22 to €35 a day in 2026, by date.
04
Who should skip it?
Anyone who hates long days or stairs. Genoa and Portofino are closer to Milan.

Focaccia, trofie al pesto or fried anchovies, then a boat along the cliffs when the sea allows.
Midday
04
Monterosso and home
A swim or a walk on the only big beach, then the journey back to Milan in the evening.
Getting there on your own, tickets and cards, the rules and what to bring: one tab each.
Direct Intercity trains leave Milano Centrale about every 2 hours for Levanto, Monterosso and La Spezia Centrale.
The journey takes about 3 hours: the 12:10 Intercity reaches Monterosso at 15:07 and La Spezia at 15:21.
Intercity seats must be reserved; advance fares start at about €15.90 one way, walk-up fares are higher.
For Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, change to the local Cinque Terre train at Monterosso, Levanto or La Spezia.
Driving is not worth it: parking in the villages is scarce, so drivers leave the car in Levanto or La Spezia.
The Cinque Terre Treno card 2026: €22, €29.50 or €35 a day for an adult, depending on how busy the date is.
It covers unlimited local trains between Levanto and La Spezia, the paid coastal path, park buses and toilets.
A single local train ticket costs €5 to €10; children 4 to 11 pay half.
Trails only: the Trekking card is €10, or €15 on busy days.
Ferries are separate: about €42 for a day ticket in 2026.
Flip-flops and smooth-soled sandals are banned on the trails; fines can reach €2,500.
The Via dell'Amore runs one way only, Riomaggiore to Manarola, with a timed booking and a €10 card supplement.
The Corniglia to Manarola path is closed; the detour via Volastra takes 2.5 to 3 hours.
The boats do not stop at Corniglia and do not run in rough seas or from November to late March.
Most tours are not wheelchair accessible: the villages are steep, with many steps.
Closed walking shoes with grip.
A swimsuit and small towel from June to September.
Water, a hat and sunscreen: there is little shade on the paths.

It is a long day given 3hr train trip each way from Milan, but definitely worth it. Having a personal guide compared to group tours is a much better way to see these beautiful towns and small streets.
★★★★★
Well organised tour. Mario the tour guide was very knowledgeable and amiable. We had 2 hours in Monterosso which gave us plenty of time to explore. We enjoyed the walk down the hill to Manarola to catch the train.
★★★★★
We have taken quite a few tours throughout the years and this has been the tour we have enjoyed the most. The tour pace was great and we visited all the key areas in one day without feeling rushed.
★★★★★
What an amazing day. She helped us navigate the trains and the ferry. We were a small group of 12 to 15 people. She kept us all together and directed us where we needed to be.
★★★★★
Our guide Mateo was fantastic, very knowledgeable and always bringing up interesting facts. From where to buy the best local wine, to booking us a nice table with the best view in Vernazza.
★★★★★
Our family LOVED this tour! This boat trip is the perfect way to see the Cinque Terre on a day trip. We were able to swim off of the boat multiple times in different locations.
Shorter day?
Genoa and Portofino instead
Less time on the road: Genoa's old town and a boat to Portofino, the Riviera's most famous
harbour, on an organised day from Milan.
Genoa & Portofino Day Trip with Boat Ride
★ 4.2 · 237 reviews · 12 hours
Genoa is about half the distance of the Cinque Terre from Milan, so this coach day spends less time on the road: free time in Genoa's old town, then a boat from Rapallo to Portofino and back, with a tour leader and optional pickup in central Milan.
A day trip from Milan to the Cinque Terre is doable, popular and, done right, one of the best
days in northern Italy. Done wrong, it is six hours on a bus for two hours in a crowd. Here is how to get it right.
What the Cinque Terre are, and what they are not
The Cinque Terre ("five lands") are five villages on the Ligurian coast between Levanto and La Spezia:
Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. They cling to cliffs above the sea, with
terraced vineyards and olive groves climbing the hills behind, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997,
together with Portovenere and its islands, and a national park in 1999. They are not a resort and not one town:
you move between them by local train, on foot or by boat, and each one takes an hour or two to explore.
The local train links all five villages; each hop takes about five minutes.
Getting there: train or tour
The coast is about 3 hours from Milan whichever way you go. Direct Intercity trains leave Milano Centrale
about every 2 hours for Levanto, Monterosso and La Spezia, with advance fares from about €15.90; you then use
the local train, which the Cinque Terre Treno card covers for €22 to €35 a day in 2026. Organised coach tours
cost from about $80 to $163 and take care of the logistics, but coaches cannot drive into the villages, so they
park in La Spezia or Levanto and put you on the same trains and boats. The best-rated option on this page skips
the coach entirely: first-class train tickets and a private guide waiting on the coast.
The honest small print: the most common complaint about coach tours from Milan is time.
Reviewers mention 5:00 alarms, 14-hour days and two or three hours in the villages, and one tour lost part of its
afternoon to traffic. If you have the energy to navigate two trains, doing it yourself or with the train-and-guide
day gives you more coast for the same long day.
What a good day looks like
Take an early train or the 7:00 coach, start in Riomaggiore or Manarola for the classic cliff views, and ride
the train north to Vernazza for lunch by the harbour: focaccia, trofie al pesto or a cone of fried anchovies. In
season, take the boat between villages for the view from the water, which is the photo everyone wants, and end
in Monterosso for a swim on the only real beach before heading back. If you like walking, the path from
Monterosso to Vernazza takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and is the most rewarding stretch.
Pesto, focaccia and fried anchovies: lunch is part of the point.
When it is not worth it
In winter the boats stop, many restaurants close and trails can shut after rain, so the long journey buys
less. In July and August the villages are packed and hot. If you only have one free day in Milan and do not
love long journeys, Lake Como is about an hour away and Genoa with Portofino about half the distance; the
Cinque Terre reward those who can give them a full, early day.
The Monterosso to Vernazza path: about 1.5 to 2 hours of steps and sea views.
Straight answers to what travelers ask most about the Cinque Terre from Milan.
Can you do the Cinque Terre as a day trip from Milan?
Yes, but it is a long day. The coast is about 230 km from Milan, roughly 3 hours each way by direct train or by road, so a 12 to 14 hour day leaves you about 4 to 6 hours on the coast. That is enough for three or four of the five villages if you use the trains and, in season, the boat. See the one-day itinerary.
How long is the train from Milan to the Cinque Terre?
About 3 hours. Direct Intercity trains leave Milano Centrale roughly every 2 hours for Levanto, Monterosso and La Spezia Centrale (for example 12:10, arriving at Monterosso 15:07). Seats must be reserved, and advance fares start at about €15.90. Slower regional trains need a change in Genoa. Details in the train guide.
Is it better to take the train or a tour from Milan?
The train is cheaper and usually gives you more time in the villages, because coaches cannot drive into them and have to switch to local trains or boats anyway. A tour is easier if you want everything arranged, and the first-class train day with a private guide combines both. The most common complaint on coach tours is too much time on the bus and too little in the villages.
How much does a Cinque Terre day trip from Milan cost?
Coach tours start from about $80 per person (without the local train card) to $163 with a boat ride. A first-class train day with a private guide is from $681 per person, and private drivers start at about $1,502. Doing it yourself costs roughly €32 to €80 in return train fares plus €22 to €35 for a one-day Cinque Terre Treno card in 2026.
Do I need a Cinque Terre Card?
Only if you will ride the local trains several times or walk the paid coastal path. The 2026 Cinque Terre Treno card costs €22, €29.50 or €35 for an adult depending on the day, and covers unlimited local trains between Levanto and La Spezia plus trail access. A single train ticket between villages costs €5 to €10. See the Cinque Terre Card guide.
Which villages can you see in one day?
Realistically three, four with a good plan. Monterosso has the big beach, Vernazza the harbour and castle, and Manarola and Riomaggiore the famous cliff views. Corniglia sits about 100 metres above the sea, about 380 steps from its station, so most day-trippers skip it.
Do the boats run all year?
No. The Cinque Terre ferries run from 28 March to 1 November in 2026, stop at every village except Corniglia, and are cancelled in rough seas. Tours that include a boat ride swap it for the train when the boat does not run.
Can you hike between the villages on a day trip?
Yes, one stretch fits well: Monterosso to Vernazza takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and is open. Vernazza to Corniglia is open too, Corniglia to Manarola is still closed, and the short Via dell'Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola needs a timed booking and a €10 supplement on the card. Read the hiking guide.
When is the best time for a Cinque Terre day trip?
Mid-May to mid-June and September to early October: warm, the boats are running and the crowds are thinner than in July and August. From November to March the boats stop and many restaurants close, but the villages are quiet.
What should I wear to the Cinque Terre?
Comfortable closed shoes with grip. The villages are steep and full of steps, and flip-flops or smooth-soled sandals are banned on the trails, with fines of up to €2,500. Bring a swimsuit in summer. See what to wear.
Can I cancel a Cinque Terre tour from Milan?
The coach tours listed here cancel free up to 24 hours before. The first-class train day with a private guide and both private-driver tours are non-refundable once booked, so be sure of your date before you pay.
Cinque Terre or Portofino from Milan: which is easier?
Portofino. Genoa is about 170 km from Milan and Portofino a short hop beyond it, so a Genoa and Portofino day spends less time on the road. The Cinque Terre is the bigger payoff: five villages, the trails and the boat. Compare them in Cinque Terre or Portofino.
