The Cinque Terre in one day from Milan

A Cinque Terre day from Milan is possible, but it is a long one. This is how the hours actually add up, which villages to choose and how to move between them without wasting time.

Vernazza, with its harbour and castle, is the village most day-trippers put first.

The coast is about 3 hours from Milan each way, so even a 12 to 14 hour day leaves you roughly 4 to 6 hours in the villages. That is enough for three villages done well or four done briskly, not all five.

This plan is built around the direct train and the local train between villages, with the ferry as a bonus when it runs (28 March to 1 November in 2026).

The quick answer

Plan on about 5 hours on the coast. Start in Monterosso, take the train or boat to Vernazza for lunch, skip Corniglia, then finish in Manarola and Riomaggiore before the train home. The local train hops take about 5 minutes; the boat is slower but gives you the view from the sea.

Leave an unhurried hour for lunch: pesto is Liguria's own.

How much time do you really get in the Cinque Terre?

About 4 to 6 hours. The journey is about 3 hours each way, whether you go by train or by coach.

Coach days lose more of it: the bus cannot drive into the villages, so you change to trains or boats on arrival, and traffic eats into the schedule. Guests on the most-booked coach day report as little as 2 to 3 hours in two villages. On the train you arrive in the villages directly.

Which villages should you see in one day?

Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Corniglia is the one to skip on a day trip.

Monterosso has the only real sandy beach and is where the direct train stops. Vernazza has the only natural harbour, the Doria Castle tower and the church of Santa Margherita. Manarola has the classic cliff-top view, and Riomaggiore is the closest to La Spezia for the trip home. Corniglia sits on a promontory about 100 metres above the sea, about 380 steps up from its station, and the ferry does not stop there.

What does a realistic one-day route look like?

North to south: arrive at Monterosso, then Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore, and head home from La Spezia.

  • Morning: first direct Intercity from Milano Centrale to Monterosso. Walk the old town and the seafront.
  • Late morning: local train or boat to Vernazza. Harbour, castle tower, lunch.
  • Afternoon: train to Manarola for the viewpoint, then one stop to Riomaggiore.
  • Early evening: train to La Spezia Centrale and a direct Intercity back to Milan.

Should you hop between villages by boat or by train?

Train for speed, boat for the view. Each train hop takes about 5 minutes and runs every 15 to 20 minutes in season; the ferry is slower and weather-dependent.

The ferry runs from 28 March to 1 November in 2026, stops at every village except Corniglia, and is cancelled in rough seas. A day ticket costs about €42 for an adult. A good compromise is one boat leg, for example Monterosso to Vernazza, and the train for the rest. For more time on the water, the 3-hour boat tour from Monterosso passes all five villages.

Can you add a hike to a one-day trip?

One short stretch, yes: Monterosso to Vernazza takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, or walk the short Via dell'Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola with a timed booking.

A hike costs you a village, so trade it for Monterosso or for the Manarola stop. Corniglia to Manarola is still closed. All the details are in the Cinque Terre hiking guide.

Where should you eat?

Lunch in Vernazza or Manarola, and something quick in the others: focaccia, pesto, fried anchovies from Monterosso, and a limoncino.

Liguria is the home of pesto and focaccia, and trofie al pesto is the classic pasta. Book or arrive early for a harbour table in high season, because day-trip groups arrive around 10:00.

When is the best time of year for a day trip?

Mid-May to mid-June and September to early October: warm, the boats run, and the crowds are thinner than in July and August.

About 4 million people visited in 2023. Tour groups pour in around 10:00, and the villages calm down after about 16:00, which favours an early train. Cruise days in La Spezia add thousands more. From November to March the boats stop and many restaurants close, but you get the villages almost to yourself.

Train on your own, or a tour?

On your own if you are happy to read timetables; a tour if you want the transport handled. The first-class train with a private guide combines the two.

The cheapest seat is the budget coach from $80, but check whether your option includes the local train card. The coach day with a boat ride from $163 cancels free up to 24 hours before. The private guide day (from $681) is non-refundable, so book it only once your date is fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see all five villages in one day from Milan?

Technically, but you would spend most of the day on platforms. Three or four is the realistic number; most people skip Corniglia.

Is a Cinque Terre day trip from Milan worth it?

Yes, if you accept about 6 hours of travel for 4 to 6 hours on the coast. If that sounds too long, a Genoa and Portofino day is shorter on the road.

What time should you leave Milan?

On the first direct train of the morning, around 6:00. Coach tours leave from about 6:00 to 7:00 too.

Do the boats run in winter?

No. In 2026 the Cinque Terre ferries run from 28 March to 1 November; outside that, you move by train.
